From local rock legends like Tesla to the The Deftones, Sacramento has seen its fair share of fame and glory in the world of rock ‘n’ roll.

In that vein, City College is a tool for aspiring artists and creative souls to sharpen their skills, network and collaborate with other artists. DiverCity Records, City College’s own record label, offers students an opportunity to get a head start in the recording industry.

“[The students opportunity to record] a CD with their own [original music] on it is a very good first step in building [a music] portfolio,” says John Villec, City College recording arts professor.

While many students who take Villec’s recording classes submit works to DiverCity Records, any student who has an original song recorded can also submit it for consideration.

“You don’t have to be a music major,” Villec says. “The opportunity [to be on the CD] exists for all City College students.”

Gabriella Beatrice, a former employee of Tower Records’ sister label, teaches the class that DiverCity Records was born from, “The Development and Management of an Independent
Record Label,” or MUSM 115.

“Artists chosen for the compilation CD can expect that students [enrolled] in this class will promote, market and sell the CD,” Beatrice says. “At the same time, artists should also expect to be involved in the marketing and promotion themselves, with concerts and other campus events and performances.”

Ira Mangella, an audio production and music business major, says working with DiverCity Records has taught him a lot about the music business.

“It’s great for networking, and it’s very hands-on,” Mangella says. “We get to work through each step of creating and marketing a CD from scratch.”
As treasurer and secretary of DiverCity Music and Productions, Mangella is not only busy with keeping up with the responsibilities of each position but with marketing and creating publicity for the CD compilation project as well. With submissions trickling in, Mangella says he has his work cut out for him.

“We’ve only gotten a few submissions so far,” Mangella says. “We’re trying to gain more involvement with the musicians around campus.”

DiverCity Records provides an outlet for the musically inclined to gain exposure with regular open mic nights and performances on the quad at noon.

The label’s goal for the CD compilation project is to feature as many diverse acts as possible, says Mangella.

“We are open to any genre,” Mangella says. “Country, rock, rap – we want it all. The samples just have to be original without any sampling from [copyrighted] work, and must not contain profanity. Other than that, we are open to anything.”

Every semester brings a new sound and a different genre into focus, according to Villec.

“I can’t predict it,” Villec says. “Every semester my students seem to find a different collective interest. My job as a teacher is to bring in a variety of experiences that they might not have wanted to work with before.”
