City College’s softball team was without most of its starters April 10 when the team lost to second-ranked College of San Mateo 11-1.

With ace pitcher Ashten Welch and designated hitter Noelani Kakalia out sick, starting shortstop Mickey Loveridge injured (hip pointer), and center fielder Aaliyah Oliver on disciplinary leave, the Panthers had a new line-up when the team took on the Bulldogs at Thursday’s game.

Filling in for Loveridge, Stephanie Bagwell moved to shortstop while Kristina Morris took over for Bagwell at second base. Megan Winton re-positioned to center field for Oliver, and Jackie Cordy took to right field for Winton. Lucia Lopez-Ramirez came in from outfield to start at left field for Miller.

After a scoreless first inning, the Bulldogs went on a tear with five runs on five hits. The team’s starting first baseman Melina Rodriguez came up for the Bulldogs with a two-run double. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch Rodriguez crossed home plate when designated hitter Taylor Cruse hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

Bulldogs’ shortstop Kayleen Smith hit an RBI single during the second and scored a run on a fielding error. The inning ended when second baseman Talisa Fiame was caught stealing second base.

Two unearned runs came, one each from pinch runner Lacie Crawford on a fielding error and Kayleen Smith after a fielder’s choice.

The Panthers’ lone run came from first baseman Taylor Martinez in the bottom of the third inning. Martinez—who had a double in the first inning—hit an RBI single, bringing home third baseman Morgan Green. The team closed the inning with two runners left on base.

The Bulldogs scored one more run in the fourth inning before closing pitcher Lauren Berriatua stepped in for the team and retired six consecutive batters to end the game.

Panthers’ starting pitcher Meghan Wantz (9-2) pitched two and one-third innings and credited with the loss.
