Hours after Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, approximately 50 demonstrators from City College marched Friday Jan. 20 in Sacramento to the steps of the California State Capitol in protest of the inauguration.
Participants marching from City College detoured at C.K. McClatchy High School as they walked down Freeport Boulevard to Downtown. Anti-Trump protesters chanted to onlooking high schoolers to “walk out” and “join us” from the parking lot of McClatchy High School.
Students peered through staff and police guarding the front doors while other students exited from the side of the school, joining the demonstrators.
Organizers of the demonstration arranged several rendezvous around the city; including the Quad on City College’s main campus, City College’s West Sacramento campus, McClatchy Park in Oak Park and Woodlake Park in the Arden area.
Each group was instructed through a public Facebook event to simultaneously converge on the state Capitol steps at 2 p.m.
At 2:30 p.m, 30 minutes after the planned arrival, groups marching from City College and McClatchy Park joined the awaiting protesters on the West Steps of the Capitol.
The combined groups chanted in unison, echoing, “Not my president!”, “Dump Trump!” and “Say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here!” through the surrounding city streets.
Though City College student Jacob Standley, a digital media and performing art major, is a Trump supporter, he said he attended the protest at the Capitol to support the demonstrators right to freedom of speech.

Standley and the few other Trump supporters who came together wore “Make America Great Again” hats and walked with the crowd of anti-Trump protestors up the Capitol steps.
While being interviewed, Standley was constantly interrupted by anti-Trump protesters for supporting the new president.
To one intrusion Standley calmly responded, “You’re allowed to support whoever you want.” The intruder, proudly displaying a sign reading, “White Queers for Black Resistance” between Standley and the reporter interviewing him, shouted “Thank you! As if I needed your fucking permission.”
The protests, for the most part, were peaceful and without violence.
More protests will happen in the Capitol during the Jan. 21 Women’s March.
