For some, student behavior that gives reason for a college to host an anti-bullying event is discouraging, but City College’s Staff Resource Center and Cultural Awareness Center did just that on Nov. 19 in an effort to educate students about what to do in case they find themselves being harassed by a bully.

The In My Shoes event provided attendees with information pertinent to all things bully-related.

Topics discussed included identifying and addressing the behaviors of a bully, advice for victims of bullying, and how to manage the responsibility of stopping bullying from happening to others.

According to the event’s facilitator and Staff Resource coordinator Norman Lorenz, part of that responsibility is to keep in mind that students aren’t the only targets of City College bullies.

Lorenz, who is also a City College professor of early childhood education, says that bullying is never acceptable, regardless of whom the target is.

“I see a bigger picture from my standpoint,” said Lorenz. “I don’t just see our student body – I also see our faculty and those who work here.  Anytime a [person] tries to take power over another human being, it is not acceptable, whether it be a student or a teacher.”

Tracy also says that fear is often what causes many people to look away.

“Often times, people don’t say anything because they don’t want to become the focus of that bully’s attention,” says Tracy. “We as a community and as a college have to take a stand and let that person know that [bullying] isn’t allowed.”

Lorenz states that victims of bullying especially need to speak up.

“If you don’t make a report about it, we can’t do anything about it,” says Lorenz.

City College Club and Events Board project leader Lincoln Scott, child development major, gives simple advice that is easy to remember and applies to anyone in any bully-related situation.

“It’s not like you don’t know what to do – you know what to do,” says Scott. “Make the decision and do it.”
