Transportation to the West Sacramento Outreach Center is about to become cleaner, greener and easier due to new transit improvements for the West Capitol location. Plans for the transit center call for six new bus berths, new shelters, new landscaping including lighting and sidewalks, and more seating.

Debra Luff, transportation program specialist for the City of West Sacramento and dean of the West Sacramento Outreach Center, says student transportation has been a concern since the conception of the Outreach Center.

“The West Sacramento Center was specifically located on West Capitol Avenue because of the close proximity to public transportation,” Luff said. “These improvements will help students because they will have direct access to public transportation through Yolo bus. They will have an opportunity to use their Universal Transit Pass.”

Project Manager Drew Gidolf says these improvements are beneficial to the entire community, not just for the students attending the Outreach Center.

“The Transit Center will be an integral part of the Civic Center Complex,” Gidolf said. “It consists of West Capitol streetscape improvements, the new Community Center, Yolo County Library, and the Los Rios Transit College.”

Luff says new improvements to public transportation are financially sound, especially in the long run.

“It means increased access for West Sacramento residents and members outside of the city to public transportation,” Luff said. “This will decrease automobiles on the road and result in less fuel emissions and traffic congestion.”

The project started in April and is expected to be completed by the beginning of December. Both Luff and Gidolf agree that improvements
to public transportation will play an important role in the development of the new Community Center and the Los Rios Outreach Center in West Sacramento.
