Acclaimed journalist, author to visit City College

Enrique's Journey

Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and national best-selling author Sonia Nazario will speak at City College Sept. 15. Los Angeles Times reporter Nazario is the author of both, “Enrique’s Journey” and “Immigration Dilemma” and has spent 20 years writing and reporting on topics such as drug addiction, immigration and hunger.

“Enrique’s Journey,” a true story of a young Honduran boy’s risky journey to reunite with his long-lost mother in the United States won Nazario her first Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 2003, among many other awards, such as a George Polk Award for International Reporting and grand prize of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.

“Enrique’s Journey” went on to become a national bestselling book and is now a required text for all incoming freshmen at many high schools and colleges across the United States.

In 1994, Nazario won a George Polk Award for local reporting for a series regarding children who were suffering from hunger in California. In 1998 Nazario was chosen as a Pulitzer Prize finalist for another series that touched on children with drug-addicted parents. Nazario has also recently become a projects reporter for the Los Angeles Times.

Aside from being named one of the most influential Latinos by Hispanic Business Magazine, she has also been named a trendsetter by Hispanic Magazine.
