Robert Martinelli to retire

Sac City Express March 9, 2014
Nine years after being named vice president of administrative services at City College in October 2005, Robert Martinelli will retire in July. According to Martinelli, he is ready to spend time with his family. “It’s time to retire,” said Martinelli. As he moves forward, students, staff and faculty will be reminded of Martinelli through the many contributions he will leave behind. Through years of planning and executing renovations, upgrades and facelifts on ...

The master planner retires

Sac City Express May 7, 2014
With the academic year winding down, I once again sat across from his desk, reporter’s notebook in hand. Binders filled with years of budgets, proposals, plans and agendas still sat on the built-in shelves surrounding the room. There is something about sitting across from Vice President Administrative Services Robert Martinelli that inclines me to straighten my posture. This time the subject of my report was not about construction timelines or cafeteria contracts—my assignment was about him. After almost 14 years at City College, the master planner was set to retire. The first question was a simple one: “What did you do before you came to City College?” Always prepared, Martinelli quietly slid me a two-page biography that highlighted a long and decorated Air Force career.

New building on schedule for completion

Daniel Wilson May 7, 2014
In June 2013, a vintage City College building, known to students as the Student Services and Administration of Justice building, was torn down and a construction project to create a new student services building began. According to City College Vice President of Administrative Services Robert Martinelli, the new two-story building, which will include 16,000 square feet of usable space, doubles the space of the original building, and is on schedule to meet its February 2015 completion goal, partly thanks to California’s recent dry weather.

Governor stumps for Prop. 30 support at City College

Sac City Express October 10, 2013
GOV. JERRY BROWN CAME to City College last October and pitched a long shot proposition to save California’s schools. In November voters approved Proposition 30, officially titled “Temporary Taxes to Fund Education,” providing a temporary financial fix for the state’s community colleges. Thanks to the proposition’s passage, many community colleges restored course sections, but so far Los Rios Community College District campuses have not seen an increase. City College has actually reduced its sections by 3.85 percent this semester compared to last fall, according to data in a survey by the California State Community College Chancellor’s Office. City College will not see any significant course sections added during the 2013–2014 year. The LRCCD utilized initial funding from the proposition for deferred payment, capital fund reimbursement and to stave off continued benefit reductions for staff and faculty, according to Robert Martinelli, vice president of administration.

Making smart choices in the City Cafe

Sac City Express October 23, 2013
With the national rise in obesity, many people, including college students, have become concerned about what they eat. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “more than one-third of U.S. adults (35.7 percent) are obese” and “obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.” For many, it can be inconvenient to bring their food or leave campus to eat. Because of time constraints or lack of transportation, often times, this leaves one option: the City Cafe. But how healthy is the food on campus, what steps are the college taking to ensure healthy options for those who want them and who decides what food is served?

Curtis Park Village project begins 2013

Daniel Wilson October 11, 2012
Light rail regulars know that the area around City College’s campus can be dangerous for pedestrians because of high-traffic levels and a lack of safe places to walk. These students will be happy to learn that as part of the 72-acre Curtis Park Village project, the city has plans to link the Land Park area with the Curtis Park area by way of a bike path on
