90 years of football at Hughes Stadium

When Hughes Stadium broke ground Oct. 13, 1928, it was the largest stadium in the country affiliated with a junior college. This year, the stadium that once held exhibition games for the San Francisco 49ers and the Oakland Raiders, turned 90 years old.

The stadium can also state a claim to hosting musical performers such as Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, the Doobie Brothers and Joan Baez. But while the days of hosting concerts are gone, football still remains an attraction for Hughes Stadium.

According to City College Special Collections Librarian, Caroline Harker, the stadium was formerly known as Sacramento Stadium and later received the name Hughes Stadium when it was re-named (during the 1944-1945 school year) after superintendent of the Sacramento City Unified School District, Charles C. Hughes.

When the stadium was complete, it had had a seating capacity of  25,000. In 2012, the Los Rios Community College District spent nearly $9.6 million so that renovation could be done to upgrade the stadium. Today Hughes Stadium seats 20,311 and the grass has been replaced with synthetic turf along with a new track that includes jump areas for the field events.

“It’s such an iconic stadium,” said Mitch Campbell, who’s in his twelfth year as athletic director at City College. “It’s hosted all kind of events, and I’ve never seen or heard of a better community college stadium than Hughes.”

The stadium’s field is played on by the City College football team as well as its soccer team–but one of the biggest events the stadium still hosts is the annual Holy Bowl football game. The game is played between Jesuit and Christian Brothers high schools.

“It’s a great experience to be in that environment,” said Jesuit Head Coach Marlon Blanton, on what it means for his team to play at Hughes Stadium.

“We look forward to it every year–more importantly the gathering of the people–with the fans and the large crowd. That makes for a special story every year.”

The two teams have been playing each in the stadium since 1969 and had their latest meeting in September. The Jesuit Marauders won the 49th meeting against the Christian Brothers Falcons, 46-7 and leads the series with 32-15 with two ties.

The first two football games were played in 1928, the same day the stadium was completed. In the first of the doubleheader, Sacramento High School defeated Modesto 33-0. Sacramento Junior College followed that up with a 24-6 victory over Santa Rosa Junior College.

In August 1960, the Oakland Raiders took the field for the first time at Hughes Stadium and played the New York Titans in a preseason game. Seven years earlier, Raiders Bay Area rival, San Francisco 49ers, played former professional football team, Fort Ord Warriors.

“The experience for the fans and the players is really special,” said Campbell. “I now have special connections and experiences with it. It’s really symbolic of the college as a whole, and it keeps thriving–it keeps going on. The renovation was fantastic–great planning by all concerned and execution–and we’re fortunate to have it. And it’s really a great asset for us.
