Los Rios Student Trustee Elections 2012-2013

Bryan Ryan

Upset about rising tuition and textbook costs? Unable to get into a class you need? Want a way to make your voice heard?

My name is Bryan Ryan, and I’m running for Student Trustee in order to be the voice of the students in working for progress and change in our colleges. As Student Trustee, I’ll sit on the highest decision-making board with elected college officials and communicate and advocate for issues that concern us as students.

As a student, I’ve invested three years of my life in our colleges through pursuing a communications degree, being involved in numerous clubs, encouraging student involvement in elections and also working on campus in the LRC. I enjoy talking to students and serving others and would love the opportunity to serve the student body in a more influential position of advocacy.

Having been on campus and involved in student life, I know the issues we face as students. I know about the rising textbook prices, and the ridiculous cuts of essential courses. I know the stories of students who still face discrimination on campus. I believe we can make a difference.

The life skills and training I’ve received will help me to effectively listen to students’ needs, communicate them to college decision-makers, and diligently work to ensure changes are made that benefit students on campus. Thank you for taking the time to vote and be involved in our colleges.

LaToya Daniels

The decision to run for student trustee isn’t one to be made on a whim. I have thought tirelessly about the commitment it takes and whether or not I feel I can make the sacrifices needed to be effective.

The answer is YES.

I have served the students of Los Rios before. During my three year tenure with the Associated Student Government of Sacramento City College, I held the unofficial position of assistant to the president and the official positions of secretary and president. I managed to attend every Student Advisory Committee and Board of Trustees meeting for three years and serve as the student alternate and representative of Los Rios at a national lobbying conference. I’ve met with Sacramento’s congressional representatives and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, help organize and attend the first LRCCD Student Lobby Day and others since and participated in several March in March events.

I did all this while working and being a student.

I know and have experienced the joys and hardships many community college students endure and that is why I seek to be student trustee. The next student trustee should be a person who is knowledgeable, experienced and impassioned. I am that and more. I look forward to listening to and working with students, administration, and the Board of Trustees to represent the interest- and protect the future of the diverse student population of Los Rios Community College District. I thank you for your time and ask for your vote this election season.

Carla Garcia

My name is Carla Garcia. I went to EI Dorado High School and graduated in 2007. While in high school, I was involved with ASG. We provided activities like Senior Activities Week, and school spirit activities. Straight out of high school I attended California State University, Stanislaus for 3 years. I was in Warrior Squad and created activities for college students to be a part of from fraternities and sororities to the general student population.

In 2010, I returned to Placerville and continued to take classes at Folsom Lake College. In one of my classes Anna, the Student Activities President at the time, extended an invitation to get involved on campus and join the Student Activities Club. I became the Secretary for 2010-2011. The following year I was asked to be Vice President and Treasurer.

Since my positions were given to me by asking me to get involved with Student Activities, why not go out and seek other programs that I would enjoy. In 2010, when I met Alice Textor, she mentioned that she taught a class and I wanted to learn from her.  The Student Trustee Election was mentioned, and I was determined to get involved. This position is of great responsibility, and it involves all four sister colleges. I would be honored to be a part of this position and express the importance of student issues. Every campus has its challenges, and they are all very different. On this position I could possibly change and unite the students.

Kevin Kayhanian

Time has shown certain truths to be irrefutable in the moral fabric of society. Honesty, determination, an indomitable spirit and above all, trust are traits which have propelled great leaders before me to achieve great things. As a leader, tough choices must be made. These choices, some of them unpopular at times, help to facilitate growth and promote a higher sense of understanding. As president I have remained moderate and non-biased throughout my term.

My knowledge of local and global politics has ensured my survival in a demanding leadership role of over 25,000 students. And so it is with both confidence and an eager spirit that I embark on the journey as student trustee. I do this to acquire one primary aspiration from my constituency group, TRUST. Trust that I will compel Los Rios to rise up and live up to its true meaning, which is excellence. This excellence can only be achieved through the preservation of both student access and student success. As trustee I, Kevin Kayhanian, assure you these standards will be met.

Robin (Rob) LeBlanc

The famous poet Kahlil Gibran once said, “Progress lies not in enhancing what is, but in advancing toward what will be. We live in an ever changing world and as a center for student growth, the Los Rios Community College District needs to be adaptable to those changes and remain ahead of the curve.

I would be the best for this job because I believe in my school and its ability to be great. I’ve seen community colleges across the country and nothing I’ve seen matches Folsom Lake College. The facilities are excellent, the staff is informed and the professors are inspiring. After semesters of uncertainty about my educational goals at other colleges, I finally found what I was truly passionate at Folsom Lake College, when I attended the Business 300 class of media magnate J.J. McClatchy.

My experience in that class gave me an anchor to hold onto, and a vision of what I could accomplish in my life if I let myself be motivated by my ambition. Now that I have figured out what I want in my life I can now be of service to my fellow students and help them to discover what drives them as well. To do this though, we need to think towards the future and how things will be done then; not just how things have always been done before. The Los Rios Community College District has 82,000 different hopes, dreams, and ambitions; and I believe it’s my job to help guide them into the future.
