City College’s tennis team faced a difficult challenger Feb. 25 as the Panthers lost every match to Fresno City College, the 2013’s state champion.

“Fresno is just very deep,” said City College’s head coach Dave Griffin.

In doubles, the women’s No. 1 team stood out, falling to the Bulldogs 8-6 in a spirited match. With the pairing of City College’s Vanessa Van Der Valk and Fresno’s Nadzeya Stokes, Stokes had her hands full.

“It was a good, very good match.” Van Der Valk said. “Coach says that we are improving.”

On the men’s side, the doubles match for Panthers’ teams No. 1 and No. 2 resulted in 8-0 each.

“This season we’re down two every match,” said No. 5 player Phillips Stewart.

Simply put, without a No. 3 doubles team and No. 6 player, the men lose two team points every match.

According to Griffin though, facing a dominant team like the two-time state champion is a learning experience.

“(The team is) a work in progress,” Griffin said. “Our goal is just to get better everyday.”

In the men’s singles, No. 1 Juan Ortiz and No. 2 Hahn Cao played tough, but each was defeated in two sets.

In the No. 2 match, the last of the day, Van Der Valk, lost to Candace Egan 6-2 and 6-1.

Panthers’ No. 4 Brenda Saeturn lost to her Bulldog opponent 6-3 in both matches.

Griffin asserted that although the invite was a challenge, it would motivate the team to get “better every day.”

“Focus on the process more than the results,” said Griffin.
