Panthers take Golden Eagles

After a slow start, City College’s softball team dominated Feather River College Feb. 15 with a final score of 12-3.

In the first inning of play, the Panthers had two doubles and a runner on third. An error by Feather River College allowed the runner on third to score, ending the first at 1-0.

After some wild pitches and an earned run in the second inning by Panthers’ starting pitcher Meghan Wantz, City College softball coach Tim Kiernan decided to bring freshman pitcher Erikka Burke to the mound.

“(Burke) shut them down,” said Kiernan. “She came in, and stopped them and got the win.”

Burke entered the game with only one out in the top of second inning. City College allowed two runs by error before the last out to end the top of the second down 3-1.

Burke and defense stepped it up in the later innings, allowing no runs in 15 at-bats.

The Panthers scored two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game 3-3. From that point on, the Panthers’ offense went on a tear.

In the fourth inning, the Panthers scored five runs, taking the lead at 8-3.

The next inning was more or less the same, when Stephanie Bagwell—who had a total of 3 RBIs—capped off a four-run inning with a 2-run double, making the score 12-3. With only one out in the inning, the team closed out the game on a 10-run rule in the fifth.

The Panthers had a total 14 hits, with outfielder Megan Winton leading the way Winton had 3 hits, 2 RBI’s and 3 runs in the game.

Dominant hitting and pitching throughout the game proved to give Panthers the win for a final 12-3 score.
