SCC Foundation gives scholarships

The Sacramento City College Foundation recently awarded four City College staff members scholarships helping them further their academic careers.

This year the SCC Foundation recognized Tanya Anderson, Ashmeeta Mishra, Joanie Mitchell and Hannia Velez with $500 scholarships for pursuing their education.

Recipients for this award must be working to complete an associate degree and also hold full-time positions on campus.

“We had many applicants, but these four rose to the top; they had shining proposals,” said Mary Leland, executive director of the Foundation. “We don’t do enough to recognize all levels of staff and students, and that’s something we’re working on, building a culture of recognition.”

The SCC Foundation is a donor-based organization that provides scholarships to students and staff members, and also awards mini-grants to programs on campus not funded by “traditional means,” according to their website.

The scholarships help students and staff members with everything from paying for tuition and books, to gas money or anything else that becomes costly in the upcoming semester.

“The money has covered books, enrollment fees and I changed the memory card and power cord on my current laptop that was not in a very good shape,” Valez said. “It is definitely a very heartwarming feeling and makes me want to continue my education.”

Providing financial help to qualified City College candidates, the Foundation strives to keep students in school who may have otherwise dropped out because of financial hardships.

“Maybe there’s not enough money in the state budget, it really helps bridge that gap between what we get publicly by filling it with private donations,” LeLand said.

The Foundation accepts all levels of donations, which go directly into student scholarships.
