Beginning its title defense and season with its first tournament on Sept. 4 at Bartley Cavanough Golf Course in South Sacramento, City College’s women’s golf team felt the familiar feeling of victory once again.
The team’s hard work showed during the match, winning the first conference tournament with a final score of 308, beating second place Modesto Junior College by 27 strokes.
“They worked very hard on their skills and were very prepared for the tournament,” said Coach Tim Kiernan.
Leading the Panthers to victory were Kayla Riede and Elisse Van Deusen, who shot a 73 and 74, respectively.
The team hopes to defend its title as state champions, but know it still has a lot of work ahead of it. It realizes, as is usually true with golf, that it still need to sharpen up some of its skill and remain mentally tough to have a successful season.
The team looks to stay victorious again on Sept. 7 in the second Big-8 Conference Tournament at Kennedy Golf Course in Napa.
