MOVIE REVIEW: “Kick-Ass”

Tongue-in-cheek hero flick delivers on its promise

The tagline for “Kick-Ass” fits the film perfectly. It simply reads, “I can’t read your mind, but I can kick your ass.”

The film stars relative newcomer Aaron Johnson as Dave, an average, invisible high-schooler whose love for comic books is taken to the next level as he dons a green wetsuit and picks fights with petty criminals.

Dave soon finds himself in over his head after aligning himself with Damon Macready (A.K.A. Big Daddy), played by Nicolas Cage, and Macready’s 11-year-old daughter Mindy (A.K.A. Hit Girl) as they begin to exact their revenge against a wealthy crime boss.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse whom many will remember as McLovin from “Superbad” rounds out the cast as the crime boss’ comic-loving son.

If you like your super hero flicks with an extra serving of cheese, then “Kick-Ass” absolutely delivers.

The film, based on a series of comics penned by Mark Millar, constantly takes shots at other super hero movies. The best instance being a line from Dave, “With no power comes no responsibility.”

Parents should be wary of bringing the young ones to see this one as it is full of very salty language and gory violence which are mostly perpetuated by Hit Girl. Again, she’s 11-years-old.

Those of age will appreciate the dark humor, the brilliantly choreographed fight scenes and Nicolas Cage’s hilarious hero voice, channeling Adam West in the Batman television series.

All in all, “Kick-Ass” is a great movie to experience in theaters and one that stands out among recent blockbusters.

I watched “Kick-Ass” and thought it was an alright movie. The gore and the colorful language provided by Hit Girl was probably the only thing that kept me interested or entertained. Nicolas Cage was also surprisingly fitting and I enjoyed his badassery* as well, but without Big Daddy and Hit Girl what would this movie bring to the table? Not much. Good review!
