The Panthers’ swim team participated in all non-relay and shoot-out events April 9 at the American River College Sprint Meet, despite being represented by only two student athletes.

Hannah Archibold placed first in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 33.78 seconds. Archibold also placed first in the 50-yard butterfly, third in the 50-yard free swim and fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke. These placements were for individual heats and not overall.

“I feel good about the butterfly, the other ones not so much,” Archibold said about her performance in the events. Archibold also said she did better than she expected in the 50-yard backstroke, an event she said she usually does not swim in.

Stevan Novoa also represented City College, taking third in his heat during the 50 yard free and third in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Although Novoa came in last in both events he participated in, he said he will continue to practice and improve to qualify for the Big 8 Conference Championships, which start on April 22.

According to the head coach of the Panthers’ swim team, Steve Hanson, participation in the meet gave the Panthers an insight into the upcoming Big 8 Conference Championships, since all participating teams were from the Big 8 Conference.

Strategy aside, the Panthers’ participation during the meet also evoked pride from their head coach.

“Just getting up and putting yourself out there and racing your hardest, I never doubt that they’re trying their best,” Hanson said.
