The City College softball team is off to a strong start again this season after winning 21 of its first 23 games and are on the way to winning another championship.

“It’s traditional around here,” said head coach Robert Maglione, of softball’s 18 Big 8 Conference titles in the past two decades. “We come out swinging.”

The best player of the team so far this season has been sophomore utility Andrea Argee. Through 20 games she holds a batting average of 0.525 and has 25 runs batted in along with six home runs. She has been the most valuable player on the team this season.

“Andrea’s the cornerstone of what we do offensively,” Maglione said. “She sets the tone [and] she gets us going. She’s a big time player — big time players make teams go in the right direction.”

The Panthers had a tough test March 4 against the Sierra College Wolverines, who are ranked first in the state.  The Panthers were shut out for the first time this season, losing 3-0. The Wolverines eliminated the Panthers in the California State Championships last season.

Argee says the team is better prepared this season and hopes to win the state championship after last season’s disappointment.

While the playoffs don’t start until May 1, Maglione thinks his team can make a championship run.

“That’s a very good line-up,” Maglione said about starters. “The starting nine kids, plus a couple that come off the bench, are as good as any community college group of kids running around right now.”

Pitcher Chelsea Talbert says that the coaching staff has been a big help for the team.

“The coaches are always pushing us to be better,” Talbert said.  “It really helps as a player to know that they’re always there and always supporting us.”

The Panthers’ next game will be at home against the American River College Beavers March 23.
