ASG gears up for upcoming elections

With the upcoming Associated Student Government elections less than a month away, the deadline for petitions of candidacy is today.

ASG petitions for candidacy, which determines who will be running for a seat on the ASG board, is due March 23. The annual election, which is held every spring semester in April, is hoping to fill in 13 senatorial seats and the public relations position.

“The ideal situation is that we elect a full board,” ASG President Debby Dixon said. “I think it’ll be a good, competitive election.”

ASG members are preparing to bring in a new era of leadership to City College. According to ASG faculty adviser Kim Beyrer, most positions on the board are open.

“All positions are considered vacant,” Beyer said. “Terms of office are for one academic year.”

Even though most seats are available, ASG officers and senators may run for re-election. Dixon and ASG Vice President Justin Turner are looking at re-election for their positions, while ASG Secretary Renee Worley will be running for the presidential seat. If current members are not running for a position, they must help and support the election.

“Members who are running in the election will campaign and behave as any other candidate,” Beyrer said. “Members who are not running in the election are asked to help promote the election and run the polling tables.”

To qualify for a senatorial seat, students must be enrolled in at least six units at City College, have at least 2.0 GPA, and have been a member of ASG for one year. Not only should students looking to run have these qualifications, but they should also be prepared to be innovators.

“We are looking for fresh ideas,” Turner said. “Whoever is willing to give us that motivation, we are willing accept, as long as they meet those requirements.”

Turner hopes the ASG will find candidates who will help motivate the student body and do their best to change the school for the better.

“The ultimate goal for the ASG elections this year is to have a motivated board that will be able to represent and serve the student of SCC in full,” Turner said. “[We’re looking for] a group of leaders that will take the time to understand and fully commit to the cause that truly concerns and affects the student body.”

The upcoming ASG elections will be held on April 20-21 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Quad. Voting is open to all current Los Rios Community College students with a valid student, or California state identification card.
