City College has only 1 win and 4 losses to start the baseball season, with Chabot College taking 2 of the 3 games during the home stand on Feb. 13. The Panthers started the season on Feb. 4 with two losses to Fresno City College.
“Things didn’t happen,” said City College utility man Zach Miller after Saturday’s loss to the Chabot College Gladiators with a final score of 11 to 2. “That’s just the game of baseball.”
In the bottom of the third the City College Panthers failed to reach base. The first two failed to get a hit and the third out was astonishingly made after the Gladiator’s right fielder dropped the ball in the mud, grabbed it, and fired the ball to 1st base just in time to still get Matt Mazinzki out.
In the top of the 4th, Gladiator Johnny Petros was able to advance to first base despite a called 3rd strike after the Panther’s catcher dropped the final pitch. Starting pitcher Kyle DeVore was then relieved by Cole Brocker.
The Gladiators then pulled their starting pitcher Alex Jack and replaced him with Blake Bond in the bottom of the 5th. The Panthers ended the inning by mustering 2 hits but no runs.
This was not the Panthers’ day, and nothing showed it more than the spectacular play that Gladiator right fielder Brett Gibson who caught the ball as he tumbled over the fence into the bull pen and managed to hold on to the ball for the second out in the bottom of the 8th.
At the top of the 9th Gladiator Sean Berrie was hit on the ankle by a pitch and awarded first base. This was the start of a Gladiator rally and prompted the Panthers to switch pitchers from Blake Bond to Jeremy Franklin. In the end, the Gladiators batted through their lineup and added 4 more runs to their total.
The Panther’s final home game of the opening series ended when Joey Matthew hit a fly ball to left field for the first out, Brian Stamp hit a fly ball to right field for the second out, and Matt Mizinski hit a ground ball and was thrown out at first base to end the game.
One of the bright spots for the Panthers was infielder Mike Sanchez in Saturday’s loss to Gladiators. He had 2 hits, a single and a double in the bottom of the 4th inning and scored the last Panther run in the bottom of the 8th.
