Police, students outside Auditorium after evacuation. Luke Otterstad
Classrooms in the auditorium were evacuated several times Wednesday, after a series of fire alarm activations occurred in the Fine Arts building.
“The fire alarms in the auditorium went off twice on Wednesday, Oct. 14, both times around 2 or 3 p.m.,” said Chris Iwata, dean of Humanities and Fine Arts. “The fire alarm went off twice on Thursday, Oct. 15, once around 10 [a.m.] and the second time around 3 p.m.”
Los Rios Police Department Captain Valerie Cox said the alarm soundings appear to have been the result of “pull station activations.” In each instance, responding officers found no evidence of fire or smoke, and students and staff were allowed to return to classrooms after the wall-mounted alarms were reset.
Although inconveniencing students, the building was evacuated in an orderly manner, according to music studies student Genoria Lundy.
Nicole Sivell, Costumer in the Theatre Department, made the best of the unexpected diversion. “We went for coffee,” she said.
