Smart phones and other high-tech gadgets are helping veterans with brain injuries adapt to the rigors of college life, a speaker at City College said.
A veteran-focused, free conference was held on campus Sept. 25 to help students, faculty and community memberslearn more about hurdles faced by such students.
“My focus is on wounded warriors,” said conference speaker Michelle Wild, co-department chair of the Acquired Brain Injury Program at Coastline Community College. “I think we, as educators, have to help them with their unique issues that they face after brain injuries.”
According to Wild, phones with lots of features and personal digital assistants, also known as PDAs, help student veterans with memory compensation, time management and organization.
The conference, titled “Returning Home, From Combat to College and Beyond”, was held in the Auditorium from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a free lunch included.
Other speakers included Bob Weiland, a double-amputee Vietnam veteran, and John Schupp, director of Supportive Education for the Returning Veterans at Cleveland State University.
The event also featured various information booths set up outside the Auditorium.
