The City College volleyball team knows the perfect way to start off a season. With an undefeated [12-0] record, it is likely that the women will take home the prize.

“I dreaded the first game,” said outside hitter Natasha Vinnikova, who has recently moved to Sacramento from Ukraine to be a part of the squad.”

“After we won the first match, our confidence shot way up,” she added.

The team’s first match was a close one against Fresno City College, but the Panthers came out on top with a score of 3-2, and have continued to soar high ever since.

“I expect us to win conference,” said head coach Laurie Nash. “I also have high expectations for the state championships.”

Although the team has been very successful so far in the 2009 season, it has not been an easy journey, as there have been a few minor set backs.

“We’ve had some injuries along the way,” said Nash. “We’re very careful on trying to manage injuries.”

“Not only that,” she said, “but this season consists of seven freshmen players, and three sophomores, as opposed to last season which had only four freshmen and six sophomores.”

These women have been practicing everyday with high hopes of ending the season with a bang. To guarantee their spot in the finals, the women have been working extra hard on defense because of the new players on the team, and also the height difference among them.

“Last season the players were much taller, however, this season is a bit more of a challenge,” said Nash. “They will have to stay on point at all times to keep up.”

“I’m looking forward to playing Sierra and Santa Rosa,” said team captain and setter Emmie Moroski. “Both teams are strong competitors, but Santa Rosa is currently the conference champions from last season, and they also hold the title of second in state.”

“I think we can go really far,” said Moroski. “By the looks of things, it is a very realistic possibility that we’ll win state.”
