Walker, Hanson begin reign as new coaches

The Panthers are ready to storm into the 2009 season, and the teams can’t be more excited.

Interim Head Coach Dannie Walker and the football team got off to a rocky 0-2 start but they won’t back down from any fight.  They showed their resilience the week after by beating Shasta College 56-37.

“Our schedule is a tough schedule,” Walker said.  “But we accept the challenges and our student athletes are always going to be ready and prepared for their next challenge week in and week out.”

The wrestling team is in good spirits says Head Coach Dave Pacheco, who expects to improve on last year’s 5th place state ranking.  They finished second in the City College Tournament on Sept. 19, the season opener and showed that they were prepared.

“We’re just practicing as hard as we can,” freshman Tyler Diamond said when asked about their preparations for the season.  “We got two-a-days on Tuesdays and Thursdays and are practicing harder than everybody else getting ready for the season.”

The women’s water polo team made a big splash in the off-season, hiring former NCAA Division III Coach of the Year Steve Hanson.  However, their season will have to wait.

“I’m extremely hopeful that we get the season off the ground,” Hanson said.  “That we’re going to have enough girls to play.  There’s a possibility that we won’t, but the way our team is built right now I’m excited about it.”

If they have enough players the women’s water polo team will make their home debut Sept. 23 against Santa Rosa Junior College.

The women’s volleyball season has already begun after an impressive 8-0 Start after Saturday’s Cabrillo Classic.   After finishing fifth in the 2008 California State Championships, the Panthers are eager to compete.

“Yeah, they’re very excited,” Head Coach Laurie Nash said. “We’ve been so hungry for competition.  We’ve been practicing five days a week for three weeks now, so we’re real hungry to compete.”

The women’s volleyball team will compete in the San Jose Tournament Sept. 25 and 26.

Coach Jang Ha-Oh and the soccer team have won their first four games.  They’ve outscored their opponents 16-2 so far and are looking to do the same to Feather River College on Sept 22.

“This year’s team is a really talented group,” Ha-Oh said.  “My expectations are really, really high.”
