The City College women’s soccer team is kicking off the new season with three wins under its belt. With 21 women on the team, coach Jang-Ha Oh has his hands full.

“The new freshmen complete the team,” said center defender and mid-fielder Kristal Hutchinson. “They make it whole.”

Naturally it takes a team a little bit of time for the teammates to get aquainted, but it seems as if the City soccer women are on the right track. While watching the women’s team practice, the sound of laughter over the thuds of kicking the soccer ball is an obvious sign they have a great chemistry and love the sport they play.

“It wasn’t always like that,” Hutchinson said, “but we’re good now.”

“We’re bonding better as a team,” said team captain and forward Vivian Lozano. “There’s no drama this year.”

The team feels this is going to be a good season.

“We’re going to do good this season,” Hutchinson said. “I’m excited.”

Last season the City women’s soccer team finished off the season with a 6-13-4 record.

“This season is extremely better than last season,” said Hutchinson. “It’s not like we’re new freshmen anymore. We’re, getting a better feeling about everything.”

On Sept. 1, the team took on Ohlone College and won 2-1 and played in a Sea Breeze Tournament at Oxnard vs. Sequoia and won with a score of 5-0. The women also took on Hancock and won 4-0 in a last minute shootout. Despite recent problems with City College’s field not meeting division regulations, the team is determined not to be stopped. They plan to finish the season Dec. 6.

“We want to go all the way,” said team captain and center mid-fielder Leanne Bergers, “and make it to the championships.”

The women’s soccer team’s next game is Friday, Sept. 18 against Mendocino College. The event begins at 7 p.m. at Hughes Stadium.
