City College baseball got a much needed win over San Joaquin Delta College April 16, but it wasn’t easy.
In the first three innings, both teams had runners on, but neither was able to capitalize on the situation. Then City College struck first in the fourth.
With runners on first and second, freshman Lucas Kephart singled to left field, scoring Eli Hynes making score 1-0. Outfielder Scott Fackrell singled down the line, scoring both Shaine Floodman and Michael Marjama.
Fackrell advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Brian Stamps reached on a fielding error by Delta’s third baseman, ending up scoring later in the inning on another error. At the end of the inning, the Panthers were up 6-0.
City College would later blow the lead over the next four innings. Going into the bottom of the eighth, the home team was losing 7-6.
But despite not having scored since the fourth, City College took care of business, scoring the two winning runs in the bottom of the eighth.
“To be honest, this was the first game our whole team played as one,” said outfielder Brian Mouton. “We were all there for the team and that’s probably why we did win.”
