When we are children, we are told to dream big, that if we try, anything is possible. As we mature, our dreams morph into something a bit more practical. Astronauts become accountants and cowboys become corporate drones, but one City College student refuses to relinquish his dreams of greatness.
Reeves Tayne, whose professional name is Multi, spends his Tuesdays and Thursdays in the electronics and technology lab where he continues working toward his next degree.
“I’ve finished most of these,” he says motioning toward the list of degrees and certificates the department offers.
Things weren’t always so well defined for Tayne. He lived in tough neighborhoods and made some questionable choices.
“I got into gangs and wound up in prison,” says Tayne. “But I started going to church on my own and I got married.”
Tayne has been married for nine years and has been at City College for four. He’s here because he appreciates the value of a good education.
“My whole life I was waiting for somebody to tell me what to do but I realized that I had to take control of my life,” he says.
For Tayne, taking control meant building a recording studio in his garage, starting with just a computer.
“I hit trials and errors and just kept adding things. I used my knowledge of electronics to create a place for people to come and do music,” says Tayne.
He hopes that his work ethic will inspire people who have been dealt a bad hand in life to nurture and develop their own talent.
Though Tayne’s music career is still in its fledgling stages, he hopes that his enterprising attitude will pay off. He introduces himself to people freely and tries to help whoever needs it.
“I want to supply the tools to anybody that is willing to put in the time and energy and discipline,” he says.
Tayne keeps a sheet of paper posted on his studio wall of all the people that he has met and worked with since beginning his music career.
“It’s amazing to see your thoughts and ideas come to life in less than a year,” Tayne says.
