The City College women’s basketball team crushed the College of San Mateo in the first game of the playoffs on Feb. 25.

“Sac City’s winning the game because one, they’re not turning the ball over, two, they’re playing excellent defense, and three, they’re rebounding off every miss,” said fan Randy Hicks.
Women’s basketball coach David Carmichael agreed, after the team won 83-48.

“I thought we executed better than we executed in a long time,” Carmichael said.

The Panthers started out strong, getting the opening tip. Seven minutes in, the Panthers’ lead was already four, and by the 12 minute mark, their lead had grown to 15 points.

“They needed more bodies,” said Carmichael, “We could keep subbing. They only had eight people.”

Freshman guard Janie Hironaka enjoyed the lop-sided nature of the game.

“It was our first playoff game, and we came out hard,” Hironaka said. “We killed them.”

Later in the game, one player came off the court yelling. One of the players on the Bulldogs accused center Treshenia Solomon of fouling her as she was driving to the hole.

“It was a little word exchange,” said Solomon. “Usually I’m able to let that roll right off. I don’t know. Maybe it was the intensity of the game.”

City College traveled to No. 1 seeded City College of San Francisco on Feb. 28. The No .1 seed was too much for City College, as the Panthers lost by a double digit margin 63-45 to end a very respectable
season.
